It has been an amazing journey since we opened our doors on April 15, 2021.

Created to provided culturally sensitive services to the Hispanic, LGBTQ+, and hearing- impaired communities, the Cannenta Center for Healing and Empowerment is built on the core values of Compassion, Acceptance, Respect and Expertise.

As part of our value of Expertise, we began offering professional trainings on July 1 to mental health professionals to support them as they provide excellent services to their clients. Since our inception, we have hosted seven trainings to 186 participants. We were also thrilled to have co-hosted with Hey Chica! Movement our first Brunch with Doctoras event, where we brought together Doctoras from all professions to meet and collaborate.

We’re looking forward to continuing to support our community throughout the the remainder of 2021. Our counseling services and support groups for individuals (ages 5 and up), couples, and families remain available when they’re needed the most. We’re also proud to offer pre-marital counseling in English, Spanish as well as LGBTQ+-affirming counseling.

Managing Stress During the Holidays

Many of us are excited about the arrival of Fall, along with pumpkin spice and fuzzy socks. But we also may be faced with feelings of stress and anxiety as we prepare for the onset of holiday events. According to the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation, below are ideas on how to minimize the overwhelming feelings of trying to juggle family, complete shopping lists, attend social events, balance work expectations, and more. 

• Setting YOUR Priorities: Pick a few activities and really enjoy them and then, skip the rest.

• Taking shortcuts to finding ways to simplify: If entertaining, purchase prepared foods or ask others to bring appetizers, desserts, even side dishes. Consider digital holiday cards rather than actual cards. 

• Changing expectations: No holiday celebration is perfect. View any missteps as opportunities to be flexible and resilient. 

• Clearly state your boundaries: It’s important to be aware of your limitations and let others know what you will and won’t do. It’s ok to decline activities or gatherings that you have participated in before.

This holiday season, make sure you allow time for yourself. Remember to do things that you enjoy. Don't over-schedule yourself and be sure to allow enough time to relax and recover after a social event. Reflect on aspects of your life that give you joy; go for a long walk, listen to your favorite music, or read a new book. All of us need some time to recharge our batteries. Be mindful and focus on the present rather than dwelling on the past or worrying about the future.

Most importantly seek professional help if you need it.
